About this design
The first permanent settlement of the London area occurred in 43 A.D. by the Roman's. It was a distant outpost of the empire but thanks to their ships being able to reach London through the river Thames, it quickly grew.
The Romans left London around 410 A.D. when the declining Empire refused to send any more soldiers to replace the troops it had withdrawn a few years earlier.
The next 600 years or so saw many different people come and occupy London including the Angles, Saxons, Jutes & Vikings.
Then came the Normans and in 1066 they crowned their King, William in Westminster Abbey and started building the Tower of London.
There were setbacks such as the recurring plagues and the great fire of 1666, but overall London went from strength to strength until it became one of the most popular and successful cities in the world, where it remains to this day.
