About this design
The Chaparral 2J was one of the strangest, quirkiest, but ultimately fastest race cars ever designed. Racing in the Can Am series during the 1970 season, but rarely accomplishing much due to reliability problems, the 2J was later banned due to its radical upgrades and safety concerns. With a standard front but a box-like rear end, the 2J was never going to win any prizes for beauty; frankly it could be called ugly. But this was beside the point, as every panel was purposely designed with function in mind. The 2J was the first car to use the ground effect method, incorporating two fans at the rear, powered by a separate 45hp engine to suck air underneath the vast body, which allowed it to maintain extremely high speeds though corners. The Chaparral 2J was a massive leap forward in race car design, and a stepping stone for what was to come later.
