About this design
Frequently referred to as Britains` greatest ever stage Magician, David Devant was a rather elusive figure. He was always genial, charming and incredibly good at what he did, but little is known about his personal life. In the late 19th century and early 20th, Devant, with the famous Neville Maskelyne, lit up British Magic in a way never seen before, creating astonishing illusions and close-up tricks. This design is based on perhaps his most famous illusion, `The Artist`s Dream`, in which an artist (Devant) paints a portait on a thin canvas, which is carried onto the stage, and then falls into a reverie. As he sleeps, the painting comes alive, and out steps the figure before vanishing as Devant awakes. Devant himself, when confronted by a boastful magician who claimed he knew hundreds of tricks, gently replied that he knew only a few dozen, but he was able to perform them very well. That sums him up: humble, yet extraordinary.
