About this design

Inspired by the BFI's retrospective of her work, we have designed this Deborah Kerr T-shirt in admiration of the Scott who seduced Hollywood with poise and grace.
Educated in Bristol, Kerr attended her aunt's drama school before moving on to Saddler's Wells ballet school. After both ballet and stage acting performances, her first film was Contraband (1939) from which her scenes were cut. In 1941 two more British films later, Kerr was on her way to screen success. The Life of Colonel Blimp (1943) saw her perform as three different characters. This was followed by more performances includung her role as a nun in Frank Launder's Black Narcissus (1947) and the interest of MGM and Hollywood.

Possibly her most famous film was The King and I (1956), where she was cast as the haughty British governess charged with educating Yul Brynner's King of Siam's children. However, it was the now world famous beach scene in From Here to Eternity (1953) that allowed her to really show a far more sensual to her talent, garnering a Oscar for Best Actress nomination in the process.
Many films followed including Casino Royale in 1966, making her the oldest Bond Girl to date! Though nominated 6 times for Best Actress Oscars, and 4 times for BAFTAs she missed out. In recognition of this and her outstanding work Kerr was awarded honorary awards by both Oscar and BAFTA as well as a Canne Film Festival Tribute. Kerr was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1998.
