About this design
Paul Gustave Dore was a staggeringly successful illustrator. His first illustrated story was published when he was just 15 before he went on to work as a literary illustrator in Paris. Dore was commissioned to illustrate -among others- Lord Byron`s work, which was followed by him illustrating the English bible in 1866. This was hugely successful. So too was his illustrated edition of Edgar Allan Poe`s `The Raven`, earning him a reported 30,000 francs in 1883. Other works included Coleridge`s Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton`s Paradise Lost, Tennyson`s The Idylls of the King, and The Divine Comedy. His precise engraving lines depict the tiny wind which moves the cloth. A major exhibition in 1867 led to the foundation of the Dore Gallery on New Bond Street. It was in 1872 that Dore`s London: A Pilgrimage was finally published. It contained 180 engravings of London scenes and was, once again, commercial success.
