WeAdmire Drummers' t shirt.
Every good band you have heard has a good drummer. Drummers essentially conduct the band and hold the rhythm together. The best of them manipulate our rhythm expectations by subverting the rhythm they establish and the very best of them do this spontaneously never really playing the same thing twice. As John Hiatt has it from his song Real Man: “You get no shocks from your computer program, come on and rock with a real man...” Or put another way, if the rhythm is established by a computer you are not listening to a band you are listening to an bandette...
For me the best at spontaneous subversion is Ginger Baker. This while consistently being musically generous. He makes everyone he plays with play well and look better. Among my favourite pieces of his are Cyril Davies from the DJQ2O CD: Coward of the County, and We're Going Wrong from the May 2005 Cream reunion at the Albert Hall. (See the video above taken from the DVD of the concert, I was there on Thursday 5th May. Extraordinary stuff.)
The poetic part of the brief to WeAdmire's designers quotes Goethe: What is uttered from the heart alone will win the hearts of others to your own. Essentially if the expression of admiration is authentic it will be interesting. The same can of course be said of music: authentic musical expression is compelling regardless of genre. The best musicians find commercial success because the music comes first. Because they probably get least attention this tends to be more so with drummers than otherwise. It is also a mater of fact they physically work hardest.
While great drummers make the rest of the band look good and rarely get the attention they deserve they none the less seem to get the attention they want – by temperament they are low profile rather than cabaret, substantial rather than stylish.
Among other sources we canvassed our facebook and twitter friends for the drummers named on this t shirt. The designer of the t shirt is a drummer as well as a graphic artist. If you want names added we will consider what you have to say, if you want the drummers' you rate names emboldened that can be done for a fee of £2 (for up to ten names). Because I own the company however Ginger Baker and Jim Keltner will always be emboldened...
