About this design

Fela Anikulapo Kuti Is undoubtedly a music giant and very influential, especially to Africans and African music. That being said, he is, without doubt, a global music phenomenon.

I was introduced to the music of Fela Kuti at an early age when my uncle would play his music in the house, and himself had once worked for Fela as his graphic artist and a member of his band.

I was very young when I first listened to Fela’s music. I must have been about five years old and could hear the lyrics clearly as my siblings would always sing along to his music and would laugh at some of the lyrics. My uncle would always sing along and emphasise the key words of the song pointing at us, imitating the great man. My uncle captured some of how Fela would express himself as if he was standing there instead.

I have never been as close to his music than during my childhood days when I lived close to the venue so closely associated with him- The Shrine. This was more than just a performing spot for Fela, it was a sanctuary, his other home. Fela played at The Shrine regularly and it often became overwhelmed with his followers, especially at night. The whole neighbourhood could hear his incredible sound.

The Shrine was visible from my house and I'd stand on the balcony to see and listen as Fela and his band performed. Sometimes my brother, my friends and I would take a short trip to the Shrine a few blocks away and play around inside.

My uncle created numerous of images of Fela for promotion purposes which were created on wooden board with paint. An average size was about 200cm in length. My uncle was also a musician and could play a few instruments and was a conga drummer in the band. He toured with Fela across Europe for few years.

Kuti was a true master of entertainment and a consummate performer. He gained a reputation for potent, insightful lyrics delivered with humour and charm. This was what made this man a master and genius. His music could be listened to by all ages.

Fela’s unique and innovative music style is easily recognisable from other artists before and after him as he stands out with a fusion of jazz and traditional African sound. He was a true pioneer in his era and still remains a great influence on artists worldwide today.

Make no mistake that through the years I have sought out and enjoyed the music of Fela Kuti. In many ways I have never felt closer to his work.

He was a genius then and still is and will always be.
