About this design
The combined Prime Ministerships of Gladstone & Disraeli in alternation ruled Great Britain from 1868 to 1885 effectively dominating the political scene with a personal duel on a grand scale.
Both men were at the height of their powers and their skill and oratory focused public attention on the proceedings of the House of Commons. Every thrust and parry was discussed throughout the country.
The political differences being no wider than in any two party system, but what gave the conflict its edge and produced deep-rooted antagonism was their utter dissimilarity in character and temperament.
Thus they faced each other across the dispatch boxes, Gladstone’s commanding voice, his hawkish eyes, his great power to move the emotions, against Disraeli’s romantic air and polished, flexible eloquence.
