About this design
Physical distortion (elongation), unlikely proportions and a pose that would challenge even the most elastic of contortionists, this painting by Jean Aguste Dominique Ingres caused a furore in 1814 when it was first shown. Influenced by the Dresden Venus, Venus of Urbino and Portrait of Madame Récamaier, it portrays a concubine using a mix of Romanticism and classicism .
