About this design
Painted by Lucas Craach, c1530, this painting depicts Judith having beheaded Holofernes , a story from the Apocryphal Book of Judith. Holofernes was an Assyrian general, seduced and encouraged by Judith to get drunk, offering her the opprotunity of relieving him of his head. Having done the deed, Judith returns to her fearful countrymen, with said appendage, who, having failed to trust god to deliver them from these Assyrian invaders, now see that they need not have been so fearful. After this, the leaderless Assyrians disperse.
