Master and Margarita t shirt
Master and Margarita, a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov (15 May 1891 – 10 March 1940), was first written in 1928. Bulgakov burnt the first manuscript and re wrote the novel three more times before his premature death in Moscow in 1940. The novel struggled to be properly published, after a number of progressively less censored editions were released in 1967 and 1973, the novel was finally published - in an edition likely to be as Bulgakov would have wanted it - in 1989, about 60 years after the first manuscript had been burnt.
The novel was considered by many to be one of the masterpieces of 20th century literature. Many dissident Eastern Europeans and Russians considered it the equal of Orwell's Animal Farm in its take on communism. It is the certainly the case that it is our webmaster's favourite novel.
The plot ranges through 1930's Moscow and Jerusalem at the time of Pontius Pilate before returning to a libertine pre Stalin Mother Russia.
The illustration of the t shirt is of Margarita as a colourful, fulfilled and fulfilling lover and as a tested, compromised and less colourful but not broken spirit.
Celebrate Master and Margarita, the human spirit, which you might say cannot be burnt, and Mikhail Bulgakov. Wear our Master and Margarita t shirt.
