About this design
This design admires Max Ernst, the German painter, sculptor, painter & poet.
Max had a tough start in life. He served with the German army in WW1, then in WW2, was arrested by the Gestapo. He managed to escape and flee to America with the help of the American heiress and artistic patron Peggy Guggenheim (whos father went down with the Titanic in 1912).
After the war his artistic career took off, and he helped inspire the development of abstract expressionism.
The artistc genes are stron ing Ernst's family with Ernst's son Jimmy being a well known German/American abstract expressionist painter and his grandson Eric and granddaughter Amy are both artists and writers.
The design uses one of Ernst's artworks taken from his book Une Semaine de Bonte (A Week of Kindness) which is a graphic novel/artists book , made during a three week visit to Italy. It was first published in Paris - 1934,
