About this design

This t-shirt is in admiration of the 1976 film Network, directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Paddy Chayefsky, a veteran of TV's Golden Age in the 1950s. It is a black humour broadside at tv networks and big business.

Alcoholic anchorman Howard Beale (Peter Finch) is told he's being fired because of low ratings. The veteran newsman reveals his impending departure on air with fowl mouthed gusto saying he will blow his brains out live on the upcoming instalment of his national news tv show. Enter Entertainment chief Faye Dunaway's character Diana Christensen who takes control of Finch's credible, responsible news show, turning it into a variety-news hour with the newly dubbed “Mad Prophet”. Lines are crossed, ratings are gained and morals duly sidestepped.

The t-shirt's design is a direct quote of Howard Beale's would-be apology for his suiside thread, gone A.W.O.L.  It was probably for this speech alone that Peter Finch won the Oscar for Best Actor. This piece prophetic oratory, strikes an uncanny resonance today. As the Wise Man once said 'There is nothing new under the sun'

Network won 4 of the 10 Academy awards it was nominated for, including Faye Dunaway's Best Actress Oscar.

There is much written about this film and in particular the quote,"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore".

Sometimes, someone writes something that just never goes away.
