About this design
Our T-shirt in admiration of Nikola Tesla features an illustration by Emma Ridgway.
"It will soon be possible, for instance, for a business man in New York to dictate instructions and have them appear in type in London or elsewhere. He will be able to call from his desk and talk with any telephone subscriber in the world. It will only be necessary to carry an inexpensive instrument no bigger than a watch, which will enable its bearer to hear anywhere on sea or land for distances of thousands of miles." - Nikola Tesla, in 1909
Born in 1856 in Smiljan, lika, Nikola Tesla was an inventor and engineer with a wonderful mind for ideas and a curious private life. Tesla studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, in 1873 before going on to the University of Prague. He began his career as an electrical engineer with a telephone company in Budapest in 1881. He later joined Continental Edison Company in Paris before heading to America in 1884. In an introduction letter to Thomas Edison by Charles Batchelor, Batchelor declared "I know two great men. One is you and the other is this young man". Tesla eventually fell out with Edison after the latter refused to accept Tesla's insistence that alternating current was more efficient than the direct current Edison had invested heavily in.
Nikola Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field, a fundamental principle in physics and the basis of nearly all devices that use alternating current. Tesla brilliantly adapted the principle of rotating magnetic field for the construction of alternating current induction motor and the polyphase system for the generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical power.
His ideas appeared to him in flashes, fully formed, and his patents and theories led to modern AC electric power systems, X-ray, Radio, Electric cars and renewable energies. His inventions changed the world forever!
A great man who is widely celebrated. Buy this Nikola Tesla t-shirt and celebrate with us!
