Robert Oliver Reed was an actor known for his brooding screen roles and legendary drinking binges.
A genuinely honest purveyor of a rock and roll existence, he honed himself a profile for booze fuelled chat show appearances and perfected the aura of a hell-raiser.
His films include Oliver!, Women in Love, Hannibal Brooks, The Triple Echo, The Devils, The Three Musketeers, Tommy, Castaway, Lion of the Desert and Gladiator.
He died while Gladiator was still shooting in Malta having spent all day drinking and arm wrestling with all comers, and winning, in an establishment fittingly known only as ‘The Pub’.
