About this design

I don't know much about Pete Sanders other than he is riding a Condor in this shot. The race, London to Eastbourne 1986, is one of many such races that are no longer part of the UK racing calendar despite the fact the public would be interested and we have always had the riders. For some insight as to why road racing is underdeveloped in the UK read Dave Moulton's blog on the subject. Moulton's conclusion that the lack of races has its roots in an ancient restriction that was an expression of social hierachies, may be familair to anyone who has raced a bike on UK roads or indeed just ridden a bike on UK roads. This comes across through the expression of the idea from drivers that you are what you drive and by extension, because we are riding a bike, we are not much. David Lloyd, just behind Pete Sanders in this picture had an extraordinary cycling career. He became an extraordinary bicycle builder and retailer. And he is now an extraordinary cycling coach. I have not been able to establish who won the race but given Lloyd's record of wins to places my money is on Lloyd.
