First of all, there`s the fact that while he`s not a household name in the West, Kitano is probably the most famous person in Japan. He began his career in 1972 as a comedian his popular nickname, Beat Takeshi (on the t-shirt), is left over from his days with a manzai, a crosstalk duo called The Two Beats, but he has since branched out into almost every area of the entertainment and media business. He is host of eight television shows a week, appearing on every network in Japan. He has published poetry, criticism, essays and three well-regarded novels.
