Antonio Canova’s Cupid & Psyche – Canova made many renderings of this pairing from Greek legend. Some painted some sculpted, but it is this one, that when you first see it in the Louvre in Paris, where it currently resides can only make you, as it did me stunned with awe at its simple beauty. The very shape and placement of the figures conveys like a ballet using only the male and female form, the aching and deep passion of love that can only come after the soul has been tortured in its longing. This rush of earthly desire reaches out through the body of Psyche in the deep hope of being conjoined and spirited away by Cupid to rapture and ecstasy. You have to love it.
