Sweeney Todd has come a long way since he first appeared in the victorian penny dreadful The String of Pearls between 1846-47. One of the first offerings to commit the fictional character to celluloid was the 1936 film starring the appropriately named Tod Slaughter as the murderous barber. By 1959 Sir Malcolm Arnold created a ballet from the tale's narrative affirming it as a versatile and entertaining Victorian melodrama with longevity.
Fast forward to 1973 and Christopher Bond's play Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street makes an antihero out of Todd, thus providing the gruesome premise with the ingredients needed for Todd's final transformation into a musical. Step forward Stephen Sondheim and Sweeney Todd the musical is born. Opening first on Broadway in 79 and the West End a year later it has been an incredible success with revivals over the last four decades and many Tony and Olivier awards.
It was only a matter of time until Hollywood cashed in on such an enduringly successful adaptation. The reliably ghoulish actor+director duo Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, along with Helena Bonham Carter playing Mrs Lovett provide a fascinatingly surreal and engrossing production. Sweeney Todd the film was realised in the States on 21st December 2007, and 25th January 2008 in the UK, to enthusiastic reviews and went on to earn a fair few awards including Golden Globes for Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, a Golden Globe nomination for best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. it also got nods at the Oscars, winning Best Art Direction and earning Depp A best Actor nomination.
Admire Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Wear our Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street t-shirt by Jędrzej Hofman.
Our t-shirts are unique for being wholly made with CoolMax freshFX. CoolMax is a patented fibre designed to wick perspiration and accelerate moisture evaporation, keeping wearers cooler and drier. This wicking feature of the fabric is made possible by micro channels engineered into the profile of and surface of the fibre. These channels are cleverly dimensioned to exploit the surface tension and capillary action of water. Being physical properties of the fibre, these channels endure and do not significantly diminish with wear or washing.
Antimicrobial (freshFX) treatment stops the propagation of odour producing bacteria. This is achieved by embedding silver salt crystals into the structure of the fibre. FreshFX treatment like the wicking is permanent and does not leach out with everyday use. These characteristics ensure the shirts remain cool, dry and odour free regardless of what you might do in them. Performance of the fabric is guaranteed through a certified and monitored manufacturing process.
